Rates and getting paid
For a general admin VA with no experience, the realistic entry range is $3 to $5 an hour, which on OnlineJobs.ph often works out to roughly $400 to $600 a month full-time. Experienced VAs advise treating $3 as the floor — below that the work stops being worth the hours.
For comparison, Upwork's own hiring pages list virtual assistants at $10 to $20 an hour on the client side. That gap is the headroom available once you have reviews and a track record.
The fastest route across that gap is automation, which is why Module 5 exists. 2026 niche surveys put automation VAs working in Make, Zapier, or n8n at $12 to $20 an hour, and AI operations roles at $12 to $22 — three to five times the general-admin entry rate, for work that is learnable in a fortnight. The other durable premiums are bookkeeping, paid ads, and GoHighLevel. What they share is that the client can see the money: hours saved, leads handled, spend managed.
Practical points
- Agree rate, hours, and payment schedule in writing before starting, even informally over email.
- Most direct clients pay through Wise, PayPal, or a remittance service. Wise usually costs less on conversion.
- Hourly suits beginners. Fixed monthly retainers come once the scope is predictable.
- Raise rates at a natural review point — six months in, or when scope expands — rather than mid-engagement.
- Set aside something for tax. Philippine freelancers earning from foreign clients are generally still required to register with the BIR. Confirm current thresholds with the BIR or an accountant rather than relying on group advice.
