As needed. Keep applying while you interview.

Lessons

  1. Expect a video call. Test audio and camera beforehand. Have the portfolio open in a tab. Dress as you would for an office interview even though nobody will see your legs.
  2. Ask good questions: what does a typical week look like, how do you prefer to communicate, how will you measure whether this is working in the first month. Being the candidate who asks these is a real differentiator.
  3. Expect a paid trial week or a small paid task. Over-communicate during it — a short end-of-day update every single day. That one habit converts more trials into ongoing work than any skill on this list.
  4. Agree rate, hours, and payment schedule in writing before starting, even informally over email.
  5. Keep applying until the contract is signed and the first payment has landed. Nothing is real until then.
