Lessons

  1. Canva: build a social post, a simple graphic, and resize for three platforms. Canva Design School is free.
  2. A project tool — Trello, Asana, or Notion. Create tasks, set due dates, update status, and build a board for an invented client's week.
  3. A CRM concept — HubSpot Academy is free and the certificates are recognised. Learn to log a contact, move a deal, and tag and triage.
  4. AI is now part of the job, not a bonus. Training programs for Filipino VAs have shifted hard toward AI over the past year and clients increasingly expect it. Practise drafting and cleaning up client emails, summarising long threads, and doing research with ChatGPT or Claude. Being the person who can summarise a 40-email thread in two minutes is a real advantage at entry level.
  5. Client communication, practised the same way as the tools. Write a daily end-of-shift update. Write a message declining a request politely. Write a message raising a problem before it becomes one. Clients fire VAs over silence far more often than over mistakes.
